Ahhh. Another Six Flags
park, another coaster themed after the mythic DC superhero. While the theme is
common, Superman: Ultimate Flight warrants a little special attention. This was the first B&M flyer in the United States, and the first
coaster in the world to feature an element called a pretzel loop. The ride
experience is unlike any other type of coaster, as riders hang in a laying-down
sort of position beneath the track. The experience is probably as close to
flying as modern ride technology is going to get.
The ride layout itself
features close brushes with the ground, overbanked curves, and the
aforementioned pretzel loop. The best way to explain a pretzel loop would be if
you took a vertical loop from a traditional coaster, elongated it dramatically,
then flipped it upside down. The forces at work reverse themselves, so instead
of hanging in flight, you’re pushed hard back into the seat. It’s a very unique
feeling, and those few moments alone make Superman worth the wait.
And wait you will.
Because of the nature of the ride, the restraints take a little longer to secure
and check. The loading station is unique because it’s actually a dual loading
station with two entirely separate platforms. I’ve never been to the park on a
day where both stations were operating, but I would hope that on busier days
they do allocate enough staff for it. It bears repeating that FLASH
PASS is
your friend.
