Georgia Scorcher OPENED: May 1999 The Georgia Scorcher is the first coaster you encounter if you go left upon entering the park. It’s a stand-up coaster, which means riders are literally standing up as the coaster runs its circuit. Some folks love these things, but I have to admit I find the experience rather uncomfortable. Stand-ups are probably my least favorite types of coasters, with the exception of non B&M flyers (cough BORG cough). That said, this is probably the best stand-up coaster I’ve been on, which is the highest praise I can offer at this time. Lines for the Scorcher can get insanely long due to the complicated loading process. Again, I recommend busting out the FLASH PASS for this. When you do ride, pay attention to the ride ops that are loading guests. They usually announce when the “seats” are going to lock into place (though often times the announcement is badly garbled). You need to make sure you’re in the best position at that point. For the most comfortable ride, you should slightly bend your knees, causing the seat to lock an inch or two beneath your crotch. The catch is the over-the-shoulder restraints lock at the same time, so if you bend too far, you’re in for an extremely uncomfortable ride (slightly haunched over is no way to ride a coaster unless you’ve got a chiropractor on speed dial).
