Six Flags Over Georgia
Mindbender
OPENED: March 1978
MANUFACTURER: Ingenieur Buro Stengel GmbH (don't ask me)
HEIGHT: 80 feet
TOP SPEED: 50 mph
INVERSIONS: 2 (2 vertical loops)
HEIGHT REQUIREMENTS: 42 inches
In today’s world of
multiple inversions and nosebleed heights, Mindbender looks pretty simple. The
height is nothing impressive, and there’s only two loops. So why is this
coaster so dang popular?
Anton Schwarzkopf.
That’s why. Schwarzkopf knew how to design a coaster for maximum impact.
As a result, this is one of the few looping coasters out there that utilizes
only a lap bar. And you probably don’t even need that.
There is one point of
contention for Mindbender, however. Six Flags advertises it as the first coaster
with three inversions. Unless there has been a major change in the layout over
the years (and there hasn’t), Mindbender features two loops. The “third
inversion” is nothing more than an overbanked turn. An overbanked turn is not
an inversion. If that counts, then I guess suspended coasters that can hit 90
degrees should also qualify as having inversions. They don’t, and neither does
Mindbender.
