While we were in the area, we took a detour to town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. No amusement parks here, but our fascination with urban legends wouldn't let us get this close and not have a look around.
You can't talk about the strange goings-on of the area without mentioning the river that runs through the city. This river was witness to a tragedy when the Silver Bridge collapsed into its cold waters on December 15, 1968. 46 people lost their lives that day.
Some people believe the sudden appearance of the Mothman a few years before the event predicted the tragedy. The town of Point Pleasant celebrates West Virginia's most famous cyrptid. Cyrptid is the official word for a creature whose existence has not been scientifically proven/accepted, think big foot, unicorns, dragons, your mom, that sort of stuff.
The statue was created by a local artist who based it on the descriptions given by folks who say they have seen the creature.
We didn't just come here to see a statue. I've been wanting to visit the official Mothman Museum since I heard about it.
I was totally excited about checking this place out. Here's another recreation of the creature, this time made of fabric and plastic. (It's on the left silly.)
You'll find all sorts of interesting tidbits here.
They've documented the creature in photos and newspaper clippings.
They also have a lot of documents from John Keel, a widely read and well respected ufologist. Well, that is, well respected in circles that respect ufologists. . . not that there's anything wrong with folks that respect ufologists.
