Six Flags Over Georgia - Coasters

Great American Scream Machine

OPENED: April 1973
MANUFACTURER: Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, Inc.
HEIGHT: 105 feet
TOP SPEED: 57 mph

INVERSIONS: 0
HEIGHT REQUIREMENTS: 42 inches

The Great American Scream Machine is a classic, and it’s been properly maintained to keep the classic feel.  The thing is bumpy and rickety – many times during its circuit, it appears to be literally coming apart (it hasn’t yet).  This is a larger out-and-back coaster that features a lot of hills and a lot of air time.  It doesn’t quite follow the traditional layout, as the second half returns to the station on the opposite side of a lake (this lake, incidentally, helps make GASM a very photogenic coaster).

Depending on your level of tolerance for wooden coasters (I’ve been working on mine), this is either a good ride or a great ride (anything less indicates to me that the rider hates wooden coasters anyways).  No matter which side of the fence you fall on, you need to get on it and take a few laps.  The lines aren’t usually too bad, though the fairly long course may cause some backup with only two trains operating.
