One of the oldest
attractions in the park (and certainly the oldest coaster), the Dahlonega Mine
Train is a traditional mine train. In the world of mine trains, it breaks down
like this: you’re either Big Thunder Mountain Railroad or you’re not. I’ve met
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. I’ve ridden Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. And
you, Dahlonega Mine Train, are no Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
That doesn’t mean the
Dahlonega Mine Train is a bad ride. Far from it, actually. My biggest issue is
the fact that none of the elements are hidden much. The key to a good mine
train is having that “out of control” feeling that is aided immensely by not
always seeing what’s coming up. The helix here is completely exposed – most
other mine trains mask the helix via tunneling or at least a couple of
strategically placed obstructions. That way, you don’t know when the helix is
going to end. On Dahlonega, you need only turn your head slightly to figure out
exactly what’s coming up next.
I will give the ride this,
however - that last drop really is surprising. Once the ride seems to have
petered out, there's still one extra drop just to wake everyone up.
